What is the difference between Bioidentical & Synthetic hormone replacement?
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is the safest and most effective way to deliver hormones without any added side effects. Bioidentical hormones have the exact molecular structure as those made in the human body. In other words, the two are indistinguishable from each other. These hormones produce the same physiologic responses as those of your body’s natural hormones. Unlike bioidentical hormones, synthetic hormones may be patented by pharmaceutical companies; therefore, they are all created equally and do not allow for customization when prescribing. The molecular structure of a prescribed hormone is the same for every single person on that drug. Additionally, synthetic hormones are not created the same structurally as human endogenous hormones. This often leads to uncomfortable side effects and an inability to achieve complete relief of symptoms. Bioidentical hormones are beneficial because each dose can be tailored specifically for your needs, not simply the set doses that the pharmaceutical company offers. What does this mean for you? Your relief will be felt much quicker and you need not worry about harmful side effects associated with synthetic replacement.
How do I know if I need Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT)?
The only way to know if you need BHRT is through specific laboratory testing. Our hormone specialist will run a series of tests; all performed here in our office, and most are covered by your insurance. Following the lab testing, our trained specialist will review your results to determine if BHRT is necessary for you. In some cases, BHRT may not be necessary, however, lifestyle and environmental factors may change this need over time. Routine testing, along with a preventative, healthy lifestyle is recommended to keep hormones balanced and maintain optimal health. Signs and symptoms of imbalance may include, but are not limited to fatigue, depression, hair loss, weight gain, muscle atrophy, low energy levels, insomnia, mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats, and anxiety. In many cases, hormone imbalances can occur with expected changes over the lifespan, such as menopause and andropause (male menopause).
How are the hormones administered?
Patients have found that BHRT with pellet implants is extremely effective. Data supports that hormone replacement therapy with pellet implants is the most effective method to deliver hormones in both men and women. Typical oral and transdermal forms of therapy produce “roller coaster” hormone levels that result in mood and energy fluctuations for the patient. Hormone Pellet Therapy is the only method of hormone therapy that provides sustained hormone levels throughout the day without any “roller coaster” effects. Pellets, placed under the skin (usually on the upper part of your buttocks), consistently release small doses of hormones providing optimal therapy. These pellets are larger than a grain of rice and smaller than a breath mint (tic-tac). Pellets deliver consistent, healthy levels of hormones for 3-5 months in women and 4-6 months in men.
